Thank you Albuquerque!!

We are overwhelmed with joy! Big thanks to all of the Burquenos and visitors that came out to the 2018 Holiday Market! Together we welcomed over 30,000 visitors over the weekend, and want to sincerely thank everyone for their support. With everyone's generous support we were able to expand market infrastructure, parking and shuttle options. Please visit our Facebook page for many photos of the event!

You spoke..We listened...The Holiday Market will be THREE Days this year: Friday, Saturday AND Sunday! All aboard...The Holiday Market is growing: More vendors, space, and fun for everyone!

Keep it local for the Holidays, enjoy a historic experience, and discover the best of Burque's local small businesses. More than 180 vendors of made-from-scratch delicious food and quality handmade crafts will convene for Albuquerque's locavorian spirit this year for the 4th annual Holiday Market on December 14th, 15th AND 16th, 2018. The event is not-for-profit, and co-presented by the Downtown Growers' and Rail Yards Markets together to bring food, art, and music together for the Holidays.

Sample New Mexico's finest cuisine, peruse all the local gifts, create some fun in the Children's zone, participate in our famous Ornament Exchange, and give back to your community at our Donation Station. See Vendor map HERE.

<<Community Ofrenda>> Ofrenda means offering in Spanish and having an ofrenda is an essential part of the Dia De Los Muertos Celebration that runs from October 31st until November 2nd. Ofrendas are set up to remember and honor the memory of their ancestors, role models, and sometimes even things you just miss. We would like everyone to feel inclusive in this activity, meaning you don't have to add a picture of your own relative, rather you can write a note for them or about them. Make on offering or acknowledgment of your role model, a person, or thing. Collaborate with the community and the Rail Yards Market in this all-inclusive space and project open for all to join. Add pictures, make an offering of food, candles, art, notes, gift anything!

<<Paper Marigold Making>> Join our loving community partners, The Off Center, in making paper marigolds to add to our Community Ofrenda. The Off Center is an all inclusive art making space that is free to the community, have them help you grow your ideas and turn them into art!

Learning, laughing, and exploring in the Blacksmith Shop, you can't help but feel the echoes of the innovation that forged the walls. The boom of the railroad era brought a surge of industrial activity to the heart of New Mexico, the historic Camino Rael vein, and the rise of the Rail Yards was the single most important factor in transforming Albuquerque from a farming village to a booming city. The Rail Yards Market, established in 2014, was an innovative concept that came to fruition by many passionate neighborhood residents and community members that all believed in activating the Rail Yards; our Albuquerque icon of innovation.

The Family Development Program integrates learning opportunities for teachers and parents, along with others who care about children, that is deeply rooted in each child’s unique cultural heritage. We work to build a common language of how young children learn that is well-informed by state-of-the-art research in child development. One way we do this is through our resource center, Wemagination, and by employing loose parts theory. What are Loose Parts? Loose parts are materials that can be moved, carried, combined, redesigned, lined up, and taken apart and put back together in multiple ways. They are materials with no specific set of directions that can be used alone or combined with other materials. Loose parts can be natural or synthetic.

<<Recycled Art>> By S.M.A.S.H
S.M.A.S.H is a mobile art studio in a converted school bus. Its mission is to inspire people to creatively reuse everyday materials. Art labs are offered at schools, camps, museums, festivals, and private parties. The majority of the supplies donated by local residents and businesses would otherwise end up in landfills, recycling centers, and even compost piles. In an era of cuts to art education and excessive consumerism, S.M.A.S.H is a symbol of ingenuity and resourcefulness. While the Bus won't be on-site at the RYM, Shelly Schucker, the owner & operator of S.M.A.S.H will be facilitating a recycled paper-pulp sculpture project for the Peace theme.

<<Programming circuitry and exploring art>> by Viejo. Albuquerque based artist, that takes an interest in combining technology with 3D art! Viejos art draws anybody into his booth, through various mediums he luminates the space with his use of LEDs combined with diaramas of jellyfishes, mushrooms and new Mexico's landscapes.
He chooses his surroundings to reflect on his art but he also uses many different different species of nature to inspire his art. Come see Viejo demonstrate how he programs micro controllers to light up his work and uses modeling hand carved pieces to silicon molds to make his dioramas. Choose love! Sprinkle it everywhere! Celebrate genuine connection with each other and build community at the Rail Yards Market for our 5th Annual Love Day on September 9, 2018! We humbly and gratefully welcome our loving community partner, Native Health Initiative, back to the yards.

Loving service is giving without expecting anything in return. Loving service is NHI’s method for addressing inequities, and serves as their primary funding source.
Why do we choose loving service:
1) It is a return to an Indigenous currency, one where money is not central, but instead one's sincerity and goodness toward others is most valued.
2) It inspires a human-to-human element to our work, a communal ethic that minimizes the ego and maximizes all of the qualities we hope to amplify in our partnership (caring for one another, kindness, honesty, trust, )
3) It builds on the strength of Indigenous communities, and helps to educate our volunteers, our partner organizations, and academic and governmental institutions about this aspect of these communities.

NHI was created in 2004, where several respected Tribal health leaders, health lay workers, faith-based leaders and health profession students sat down to discuss how to build community partnership. In 2005, NHI began work as a student organization. Now in its 11th year, NHI is a non-profit partnership that addresses health inquities through Loving Service (a human-to-human element of wanting to serve others, volunteerism).

NHI is unique because…
We work with the rural and urban American Indian community members, organizations, programs in the U.S. that is run by the Tribes working with health professions students.
>Health projects are created by and run by Tribal communities and their leaders
>95% funded by loving service, and only 5% by monetary donations

Its goal is to provide education and learning experiences for its members and increase awareness of and appreciation for fiber arts throughout New Mexico and beyond. NHI was created in 2004, where several respected Tribal health leaders, health lay workers, faith-based leaders and health profession students sat down to discuss how to build community partnership. Now in its 11th year, NHI is a non-profit partnership that addresses health inquities through Loving Service (a human-to-human element of wanting to serve others, volunteerism).

NHI is unique because…
We work with the rural and urban American Indian community members, organizations, programs in the U.S. that is run by the Tribes working with health professions students.

<<Fractal Activities> The Fractal Foundation uses hands-on fractal activities to inspire interest in science, math and art. Draw your own beautiful, never-ending fractal pattern and become part of a group effort to create large pieces of art. Who knew math and science could be so fun?

<<Dinosaur Coloring>> ABQ Reads will be making Dinosaur mosaic page (or Dinosaur coloring page for the younger ones). ABQ Reads supports parents and teachers by providing one-to-one literacy tutoring for kindergarten students three times per week. It takes 250 weekly tutors to meet the tutoring demand at the three ABQ Reads sites. Each of the three weekly sessions is 30-minutes long and is structured by the Site Coordinators to parallel and reinforce what is being taught in the classroom. The one-to-one structure of the program allows each tutor to tailor the tutoring session to meet the specific needs of each student. Each student is also given a monthly take-home book and a Reading Goodie Pack in December and in April. Over the course of the program year, each student will receive a total of 20 books to add to their personal libraries.

Derived from the traditional sand mandalas made by Tibetan monks, this temporary art installation will be infused with prayers universal peace and joy. This will be an interactive all-ages activity, so please come and help us create this work of art. Sand mandalas are an opportunity to celebrate impermanence. <<Art for All - Mask Making>>OFFCenter Community Arts Project was founded in 2001 by art therapists, artists and and other community members whose vision was to have an all-inclusive arts studio where the process of making art in a supportive community and safe environment would provide healing and build community — especially for those most marginalized in our community. One of OFFCenter’s largest outreach programs, the Folk Art Festival is a celebration of art, music, and community. A big draw to the Folk Art Festival is their giant puppet parade, so our activity table will include several puppet/mask projects for families to make/carry/wear at the market and again at our festival in September.

The RYM Children's Zone features educational games, stories, craft projects, music and other fun activities for kids and families every week. Curriculum in this zone is always FREE, interactive and usually offers a creation to take home!

Rail Yards market LAYS TRACKS: SET to rE-OPEN MAY 2018

All aboard! The Rail Yards Market of Albuquerque, a non-profit project presented by the Barelas Community Coalition is slated to re-open on May 6th, 2018. The market will bloom into its fifth year since opening in 2014, and hosts over 100 vendors of fresh produce, fine food, healing hands, and handmade art. Spring couldn't be here fast enough, as farms, foodies, artisans, and organizers chug along to prepare the finest Growers' Market experience for locals and tourists alike.

Farmers are hard at work sowing seeds, food entrepreneurs are preparing recipe and testing products, and the off-season couldn't be more busy for market staff. While many hibernate in the winter, the Rail Yards Market dispels the myths of winter rest. Winter and early Spring are intense times of planning, and staff haven't rested too much since the famous Holiday Market in December that they put in collaboration with Downtown Growers' Market. The Holiday Market hosted over 28,000 visitors, and required 23 staff and 52 volunteers to operate the event for a weekend. "We're still glowing from last seasons' markets," said Alaska Piper, Manager, "Although Summer is when we really shine, we are endlessly busy in the off-season processing applications, scheduling programming, and planning logistics for the current season." The market has received and sent over two hundred Vendor applications through a community jury grading process already, and will announce all this seasons' farmers, food makers, healers and artisan vendors in the Spring of 2018. Although non-food applications closed on February 1st, the market is still accepting local Growers and Food Businesses.

"Our moto is 'All Aboard', and we mean it;" said Piper, "I love being a part of a community treasure where everyone can participate". The market not only offers the tastiest produce, treats and one-of-a-kind finds from local Vendors, but is so much more than your typical Farmers' Market; the Rail Yards plans to expand Arts & Educational programming this year through more live demonstrations and learning opportunities, and hosts different musical, dance, and poetry performances too. The market recruits local educators, artisans, and musicians to demonstrate skills and play at the market all season long, and also collaborates with local organizations and non-profits to program special theme-days and events including Intergalactic, Red-or-Green, and Super Hero day! Overwhelmed with all the selection, and don't know what to eat? Stop by the Info Booth, and grab a local meal kit from their "Rail Yards Recipe" box program. The meal boxes include mostly local ingredients from New Mexico Growers and a colorful recipe card with instructions to make a home-cooked meal for two. The market is free and open to the public, and accepts SNAP/EBT benefits, and even doubles EBT money so users can get twice the amount to spend on local NM-grown fruits and vegetables.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Rail Yards Market, in partnership with the City of Albuquerque’s Urban Enhancement Trust Fund Grant, announces an open call to artists to be considered for a mural commission at the Rail Yards Market’s shipping container. The artist(s) will be expected to paint the mural live during market hours during the Holiday Market December 9th & 10th, 2017.

THEME/CONTENT: The mural theme is “Honoring traditions: Building Innovation” and should emphasize New Mexican’s colorful and diverse culture and traditions, Rail Road history and/or align with the mission of the Rail Yards Market of creating a dynamic hub for our agricultural and creative communities, and collaborating and preserving the legacy of the historic Barelas neighborhood. No proposals depicting profanity, nudity nor violence will be accepted. This prominent project will be an iconic addition to all of the community events held at the Blacksmith Shop, and it should be noted that the strongest proposals will include themes or content that can be appreciated by a City-wide audience, and need not be Farmers’ Market focused.

<<Pottery Demo, Coronado Elementary Teacher, Max Early>> Demonstrating traditional Leguna pottery techniques, Max Early will be showing his beautiful and innovative techniques in our STEAM zone. Come learn about how clay is harvested from the earth and the detailed work is takes to transformMax Early works in clay, paints, and is talented writer. Recently, Early was the 2015 Lannan Foundation Indigenous Writer-in- Residence Fellow at the School of Advanced Research.

The STEAM zone will alsofeature local artist, Kevin Black, who will demonstrating the collodion wet-plate process, which is an interesting photography technique developed developed in 1845. He uses original formulas for the chemistry and some historic equipment for the process. All portraits are done, start to finish in about 20 minutes as the process needs to be completed while the metal plate is still ‘wet’. As you can imagine, this is a very slow and methodical way of working. "This process provides me the time to interact with the client longer and in a more intentional manner" says Kevin, "it is just challenging enough with the chemistry and methods to be interesting and possible." This one-of-a-kind image has no negative, so conventional paper prints cannot be mass produced!

Cultural traditions are handed down from one generation to the next thanks to the energy, wisdom and compassion of our elders. It was a wondrously colorful day at the Rail Yards Market yesterday as we learned all about Agua = Water! A big thank you to Ciudad Soil and Water Conservation District and the NM Water Resources Network for sharing their wealth of knowledge with everyone. AGUA Day at the Rail Yards Market

Agua = Water = Life. Our most vital resource. Water scarcity is the lack of sufficient available water resources to meet the demands of water usage within a region. It already affects every continent and around 2.8 billion people around the world at least one month out of every year. More than 1.2 billion people lack access to clean drinking water. Sunday July 16 we celebrate our precious resource and learn about ways to preserve it for present and future generations.

Ciudad Soil and Water Conservation District will be demonstrating how rain barrels and cisterns work and will also be out with a special educational tool:: The Rolling River watershed model to demonstrate how our water resources work in New Mexico. PET-TRIOTIC Day at the RYM

Come celebrate our country's independence day while helping out a few furry friends in need! Every year thousands of dogs and cats are in need of adoption in New Mexico. Thanks to organizations like Desert Paws NM Animal Rescue and Watermelon Mountain Ranch, many of these animals find new homes. They will be joining us this Sunday so come on down to the Rail Yards Market and find yourself a new four-legged loyal friend.

We welcome Denise Weaver Ros s for some live painting. Denise is currently working on a private commission for a mural called "We the People," which combines dancers and dance styles from a broad range of cultures. Recently commissioned by Albuquerque's world music festival, Globalquerque, to create the featured poster painting for the festival for 2017, she was inspired by the "Glory of Angels” fresco in Saronno, Italy and combined references from the original fresco with prominent figures in world music playing instruments from one to twelve strings.

Did you know that the Albuquerque Rail Yards once housed nearly one-quarter of the City's workforce? Built throughout the late 1800's and early 1900's, the Albuquerque Rail Yards put the City on the map, and catalyzed the City's transformation from a farming village to a booming valley of innovation. This season we are rolling out our Rail Yards Recipes program. Rail Yards Recipes is an innovative program that makes eating fresh, healthy, and local food easy and fun! Each plentiful basket includes a colorful recipe with seasonal and fresh ingredients from small local farms and businesses from the middle Rio Grande Valley, with an emphasis on products from Rail Yards Market vendors. A detailed instructions card features educational information on how to use cooking equipment, information on farms and vendors who supply products, easy-to-follow verbal and pictorial steps make cooking the meal easy even for the most inexperienced chef-to-be. Ingredients are pre-portioned, and recipes are designed to create a hearty and healthy meal for two. Eating local is easy and affordable with Rail Yards Recipes! Each basket creates a meal for two, and is on a sliding-scale price system, so we can offer discount pricing for multiple baskets for families and low-income and EBT customers. HOLIDAY MARKET 2016

Keep it local this year for the Holidays, enjoy a historic experience, and discover the best of Albuquerque's local small businesses. Over 100 vendorsof made-from-scratch delicious food and quality handmade crafts will convene for Albuquerque's locavorian spirit this year for the 3rd annual Holiday Market on December 11th, 2016. 2014 saw 4,000 visitors to the event, and in 2015 over 10,000 came to show their appreciation for local community!

The event is co-presented by the Downtown Growers' and Rail Yards Markets together to bring food, art, and music together for the Holidays.

Literacy at the RYM

The Public Library of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County has been serving the greater Albuquerque community for over 100 years. "Albuquerque residents have been able to visit their public library at the northwest corner of Edith and Central since 1901, when Joshua and Sarah Raynolds donated Perkins Hall to the City of Albuquerque." The Rail Yards Market is excited to be partnering with this wonderful city institution this Sunday as they bring Story Time to our Children's Zone!

In the STEAM zone we have Educator/Poet/Potter Max Early. Max Early is from Laguna Pueblo located in New Mexico and writes in both English and his native Keresan language. and the cultures and traditions of his pueblo.

Barelas: heart of our city

At the Rail Yards Market we are proud to call Barelas, NM our home. Barelas consists of the triangular area bounded by Coal Avenue, the BNSF railroad tracks, and the Rio Grande. Originally a separate village, it was absorbed into Albuquerque during the railroad-fueled growth of the 1880s. The settlement was formally established in 1662, predating even Old Town as the oldest neighborhood in the city. It is the home of many artists of al mediums! We have lots fun activities like bead making in the Children's Zone, and live art in the STEAM Zone. Come join the fun as we celebrate Barelas, the Heart of our City! Recycling, upcycling, compost, we have all heard the terms but what do they really mean? At the Rail Yards Market we are committed to reaching zero waste. This Sunday we have the folks from the ABQ Reads in the Children's Zone leading the kids in story telling and craft-making revolving around literacy! ABQ Reads is a program created by the Greater Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce and is in its 13 year of existence! They are always looking for volunteer tutors for their program. Bring your grandparents or any other elder in your life to meet the folks at ABQ Reads to discuss tutoring possibilities.

The Rail Yards Market was founded on the principles of the Pride movement which include: the positive stance against discrimination and violence toward lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people to promote their self-affirmation, dignity, equality rights, increase their visibility as a social group, build community, and celebrate sexual diversity and gender variance.

Add the icing on the cake during your Pride 2016 celebration this Sunday by spending the day with us. We have a day full of fun family friendly activities planned! Artist Ramona Snow Teo of Guerilla GraphiX will be on hand to create a Rainbow Sand Mandala, come join her!

Over the past two seasons the Rail Yards Market has seen an increase in vendors from 60 to 80. During those first two seasons (2014, 2015) vendors generated over 1 million dollars in revenue! Wellness at the RYM

This Sunday May 29 the focus at the Rail Yards Market will be Wellness! There are lots facets as it pertains to wellness and with that in mind the fine folks at the Native Health Initiative have partnered with the RYM to bring a holistic experience of wellness education to our community.

The Native Health Initiative sponsors, Running Medicine, which is based on the understanding that running and exercise is a beautiful and potent medicine for mind, body, and spirit. NHI will also be bringing Traditional Healers into the STEAM Zone and motion and movement on our stage. In the Children's Zone we will have bead making courtesy of Lisa Richards with Pony Beaders.

Super Hero Day at the RYM

Have you ever dreamed of being able to fly, bend steel, run as fast as a race car, all while saving the world? Well Sunday, May 22 is your day to dress up as your favorite Super Hero or create your own, and head on over to the Rail Yards Market!

Join the Comic Crusaders for New Mexico a nonprofit group bringing your favorite comic characters to life, visiting hospitals, schools and community events all over Albuquerque. In the Children's Zone, the kiddos will be making Super Hero capes! In our STEAM Zone artist Dhaveed Woody will be teaching us how to sketch Super Heroes!

Hop aboard for the Rail Yards Market of Albuquerque's 3rd annual season celebrating all things New Mexican! Welcoming over 100,000 visitors annually, and showcasing more than 250 Farm, Food, Artisan, Educational, and Musical entrepreneurs and experts each year, the market is a hub for innovative ideas and simultaneous preservation of the unique traditions of New Mexico. 2000-5000 community members attend the market each Sunday to celebrate local produce, food, culture, and, very important to the market’s vision, interaction!

Greetings Local Maker! To power-up our placemaking initiatives, The Rail Yards Market is seeking creative makers to design and construct some mobile seating elements for our Sunday event.

Placemaking is a multi-faceted approach to the planning, design and management of public spaces. Placemaking capitalizes on a local community's assets, inspiration, and potential, with the intention of creating public spaces that promote people's health, happiness, and well being (definition from wikipedia).

Right now, we are requesting one design and prototype to be created and beta-tested by each applicant. We are awaiting a possible grant award in late May, and if awarded, a panel will choose our favorite design, and would like to pursue constructing more of the units. Anyone can apply, and we encourage local neighborhood residents to submit design proposals!

Design proposals are due by April 15th, and should be emailed to RailYardsMarket@gmail.com. Designs should include a sketch or image of idea, and a budget breakdown of how much each unit would cost.
