You spoke...We listened! The 6th annual Holiday Market at the Rail Yards will be bigger and better than ever! More space, parking, vendors, food, and seating, so bring the whole family to enjoy the day together for best local everything! Longer hours are a welcome addition--now open 10am-4p, you can take your time perusing the local chefs, artisans, farms and flavors of Burque and beyond, because the Holiday Market is home to over 200 of New Mexico's finest businesses.

Come see the beautiful new plaza and revamped parking, compliments to the City of Albuquerque. This will be the first Farmers' Market event activating the new plaza, newly built to revitalize and showcase the community potential of the Rail Yards. Parking is a breeze now in the newly paved, striped and lighted lot. The market is popular though, so to help you out and reduce the impact on the historic neighborhood, the market is partnering with the City to offer a free Park and Ride shuttle from the 2nd & Gold parking garage; just a hop, skip, and jump to the north near the movie theater. Take a stroll to the market or wait a minute at the shuttle stop for a ride.

The Rail Yards Market will be premiering exclusive merchandise featuring the famous New Mexican artist, Nico Salazar, of Future Fantasy Delight! Well known for his fantastically creative and fun work at Meow Wolf and all around the US, Nico has created a special design just for the Rail Yards!!

Indulge your locavorian spirit for the Holidays, skip the Big Box, and participate in a truly local experience at a must-see historic site in the heart of Albuquerque. Loving service is giving without expecting anything in return. Loving service is NHI’s method for addressing inequities, and serves as their primary funding source.
Why do we choose loving service:
1) It is a return to an Indigenous currency, one where money is not central, but instead one's sincerity and goodness toward others is most valued.
2) It inspires a human-to-human element to our work, a communal ethic that minimizes the ego and maximizes all of the qualities we hope to amplify in our partnership (caring for one another, kindness, honesty, trust, )
3) It builds on the strength of Indigenous communities, and helps to educate our volunteers, our partner organizations, and academic and governmental institutions about this aspect of these communities.

NHI was created in 2004, where several respected Tribal health leaders, health lay workers, faith-based leaders and health profession students sat down to discuss how to build community partnership. In 2005, NHI began work as a student organization. Now in its 11th year, NHI is a non-profit partnership that addresses health inquities through Loving Service (a human-to-human element of wanting to serve others, volunteerism).

NHI is unique because…
We work with the rural and urban American Indian community members, organizations, programs in the U.S. that is run by the Tribes working with health professions students.

Did you know that the Albuquerque Rail Yards once housed nearly one-quarter of the City's workforce? Built throughout the late 1800's and early 1900's, the Albuquerque Rail Yards put the City on the map, and catalyzed the City's transformation from a farming village to a booming valley of innovation. The site still stands this day, and is comprised of over 14 building on 20+ acres. Come learn more about our treasured historical icon this Sunday at the Rail Yards Market ABQ 10am-2pm.

<< New Mexico Steam Locomotive & Railroad Historical Society >> NMSL&RHS (New Mexico Steam Locomotive & Rail Road Historical Society) is a non-profit organization staffed by dedicated volunteers whose mission is to teach the history of Steam locomotives and fully restore the Baldwin 4-8-4 Steam Locomotive. Promoting and educating the public about the ties of State economic development to rail transportation, this society has been a leading advocate for keeping the history of the Rail roads and it's benefits to our western expansion alive since it's formation in the 1990's.

In the mid 1990s a group of train enthusiasts formed NMS&LRHS for the express purpose of restoring the 2926 to full running condition and continues to do so to this day! Learn more about this group and our buildings history!

<< Ben Swapp's Forging Lessons>> Ever seen a bladesmith in action? Ben Swapp from Albuquerque, NM will be demonstrating and teaching bladesmithing and other metal projects outside of the Blacksmith shop for Rail yards history day! An art form that has survived and thrived for thousand's of years, bladesmithing is the art of making knives, swords, daggers and other blades using a forge, hammer, anvil, and other smithing tools. Although Bladesmithing wasn't the kind of project you would see in the heyday of the rail yards train station, the technique and tools of bladesmithing were similar for smiths during the industrial age in Albuquerque! Check out this living and thriving art form that is still used and taught today!

"Railroad shops and a roundhouse were first erected on the site of the former Santa Fe Railway Shops in the 1880s, after Albuquerque was designated as the division point between the AT&SF railway and the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. The first buildings to be completed were the roundhouse, storehouse, power station, and freight car shops, all of which were located south of the surviving complex near the present Bridge Boulevard overpass. These structures have since been demolished, but the subsequent buildings completed after 1915 are all still standing.[1]

The site consists of eighteen surviving buildings erected between 1915 and 1925. The complex is located south of downtown in the Barelas neighborhood, bounded by Second Street, Hazeldine Avenue, Commercial Street, and Pacific Avenue. The shops were one of four major maintenance facilities constructed by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, the others being located in Topeka, Kansas, Cleburne, Texas, and San Bernardino, California. The railway shops were the largest employer in the city during the railroad's heyday.

The blacksmith shop was completed in 1917 and stands to the east of the boiler shop. It is the third largest building on the site at approximately 25,000 square feet (2,300 m2).[2] The building is of steel frame construction with brick and glass exterior walls.[1] The blacksmith shop was responsible for repairing cracked locomotive frames as well as forging replacement parts."

Musical Spanish Class with Bilingual Birdies Spanish>> At Bilingual Birdies, our mission is to encourage cross-cultural awareness through our foreign language and live music curriculum. We teach Spanish, through live music, movement, dance, puppetry, and theatre-based games. Our curriculum aims to teach ten to fifteen basic vocabulary words and short phrases in each class. We believe there is great value in educating young children on other cultures and languages through social and emotional play. Encuentro is located in the historic neighborhood of Barelas in downtown Albuquerque. They share our building with El Centro de Igualdad y Derechos which maximizes our organizations’ ability to collaborate and makes multiple resources available to the community in one location.

Instituto Cervantes Albuquerque>> With over 200,000 students per year, Instituto Cervantes is the largest institution in the world dedicated to teaching Spanish. Instituto Cervantes Albuquerque offers a variety of Spanish courses for individuals and groups and organizes many exciting cultural events throughout the year.

"Barelas is one of Albuquerque’s oldest neighborhoods. Originally settled during the Spanish Colonial period it has gone through numerous cultural and economic changes over the years. This includes its early colonial history as a significant river crossing route for the El Camino Real and its development as a thriving farming community in the early 1800’s. Early development took place in and around the farms adjacent to the swamps of the Rio Grande and three irrigation ditches that served the community, the primary one being the Acequia Madre de Barelas.

The arrival of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad to Albuquerque in the 1880’s effectively transformed the small farming village into the largest industrial complex in the territory. The company built a station house, switchyards, car shops, roundhouses for locomotive repair, warehouses, and office buildings on the eastern edge of the Barelas community. As a result lands around the original town site of Barelas began to flourish with commerce and housing as the railroad industry employed as many as 1500 people during the height of railroad construction."

<<Artist Display by Rachel-Harris Huffman>> Rachel Harris-Huffman explores the intersection of the natural and built environments through photography, collage, and mixed media works. She sees the life cycle of the human-built environment, as affected by climate, weather, shifting geographies, and time as an allegory for human life cycles, and the emotional, physiological, and physical events that leave marks behind. Rachel will present information about two Japanese aesthetics that influence her work: the philosophy of wabi-sabi and the conceptual art form of Hyperart Thomasson. She will demonstrate the technique of acrylic photo transfer.

Seed Give Away and Learning :: The Bernalillo Seed Library will be joining the market for a seed give away and lnteractive seed learning demonstration. Check out New Mexico's unique array of heirloom crop varieties that are available for anybody to grow!

Beekeeping Demonstration :: ABQ beekeepers, a non-profit community group, will be demonstrating some basic beekeeping techniques and have a live enclosed hive!

She is a juried artist in the Spanish Colonial Artist Society and can be found at Spanish Market each year. Annette weaves her base fabric, dyes the yarns and designs her own work. She has taught locally, regionally, as well as internationally. Her work is in the collections of the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art in Santa Fe and the Guizhou Ethnic Cultural Museum, Guiyang, China.
